Internet Censorship In China

The United States is considered to be the "land of the free" because each citizen is given the same equal rights as another no matter their race, religion, or gender. For example, citizens are given the right to vote, the right to bear arms, and have the First Amendment which includes the freedom of speech, religion, and press etc. It would almost be impossible for a citizen who has been accustomed to obtain this much freedom and protection from these amendments to be controlled by a system that prohibits what one is allowed to search or post on the Internet. However, this "authoritarian system" is exactly how China's Internet content or provider has worked till this day. For this reason, "In China, Internet content is censored: users are blocked from accessing dissenting ideological and political information; websites for pro-democracy groups, the Tibetan independence movement, and banned spiritual movements like the Falun Gong are hacked and disabled; "vulgar" and explicit sites and blogs are closed; also private communications between activists are disrupted and blocked by Chinese officials" ("Introduction to Internet censorship"). The Chinese live in fear that they are not being told the real truth about the government and are continuing to live in an environment where they are not aware of the incidents that are going on around them or outside of the country. Those who live in China, only have the assurance to state their opinion to a trustworthy person without obtaining a punishment as a result. For people in China who want to obtain new or current information, in fact, have to know an individual who is capable of hacking information through The Great Firewall, which is extremely rare. As a matter of fact, "Researchers estimate that out of China's 500 million Internet users, only about one percent or so use these software tools to get around censorship"
