Ada had started to run, and she varnished in the darkness.
Friday night, just five days before, Ada read Jane Eyre, a story by Charlotte Bronte. The story was about Jane, an orphan, who lived with her aunt. Jane’s cousins, Georgiana and Eliza, despised her, and their older brother, John, tormented her too.
“You are less than a servant,” a house cleaner reminded Jane. “Your father left no money. You ought to be begging in the street.”
Ada remembered that story that miserable night. She prayed to God with tears in her eyes, “Make me not an orphan.”
“Should my parents die,” Ada murmured, “where would I start?”

She knocked her right foot on a large piece of stone buried partly in the ground. Then, she flew head-over-heels and somersaulted. Helplessly, she went into a slippery slope and into a pool of water. “H-e-l-p-ooo!” she screamed loudly.
The long silver colour torch flew into the pool. Oh! That was disaster! A frightening darkness, ugly, and evil, took a seat. Ada felt lost. Her brain spun wildly. Above her head, stars floated and turned. She felt as if someone had gripped and squeezed her ribs. After that, she ceased to take notice of anything.
Fifteen minutes later, she opened her eyes suddenly and took in deep breath. Then she sneezed. “Tishoo…tishoo…” She stretched out her legs, but her left leg did not move. Becoming scared, she pulled the left leg very hard, but it did not obey. Desperately, she pulled on the leg until she felt hurt. She rested. Sixty seconds later, she pulled the leg again. And what a surprise! The leg came out plooooo!
Ada was free! Her hands and legs were free. Her brain spun no longer. Just imagine that! She jumped up and did a little crazy dance.
