Johnson Funeral Home Reflection

In my experience of touring Johnson Funeral Home in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota; I learned many things that I was not aware of that made the funeral process very respectable and interesting. While working in a nursing home, I have assisted funeral home employees as they came to pick up the deceased, but I never realized how many different considerations one must take for the ritual of dying. The Johnson Funeral Home staff was extremely friendly and accommodating to all my questions. The staff consists of three families that own the funeral home and are the primary funeral directors, and multiple visitation attendants that help with the arrangements of the funeral itself. Death is often a hard thing to understand and very emotional for everyone who is affected by it. More times than not it is hard to react in the proper way when someone else is dealing with a death. The book “Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs and Communication of the Dying” by Maggie Callan and Patricia Kelley is all about Hospice care nurses. They tell many stories about their dying patients and their families reactions to the death process. Most of the stories show how to better listen to someone who is dying, how to react to certain situations not just initially react but truly analyze the situation, how to make both the dying and the people around them that more comfortable and also they showed the steps of grieving.…

I chose to read the book Funeral Festivals in America: Rituals for the Living by Jacqueline S. Thursby. This work explores numerous aspects of funerals and the customs that surround it. Although some of it was hard to follow and seemed a bit jumbled, I was able to get a sufficient amount of information from it that I believe will help me become a great funeral director in the future. I was able to extract a few great lessons from the work, the first being the fact that all people unconsciously seek a transformative experience. I found that this is an experience that provides deep knowledge but isn’t necessarily accessible to the person until they have that experience.…

Death is hardly a fun topic for most of us, yet there are those people who have a terrific sense of humor when it comes to planning their own ‘big event.’ Some individuals choose wild outfits to be buried in, some write their own scathing obituaries, and some come up with very creative ways to have their cremains… distributed. For instance, Rolling Stone shock rocker Keith Richards publicly announced that he wants his daughters to snort his ashes after he dies (well I doubt he’d want them to do it beforehand). He even went so far as to say, “I’ll give them a straw.”…

It goes without saying that the death of a loved one is a difficult and painful time; family members and friends of the deceased are experiencing a myriad of emotions. Those attending services must be conscious of the circumstances and the best ways to remain respectful and polite. My dad was recently hospitalized and is awaiting a form of open heart surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Only a few months earlier, after learning material in this course, I addressed important questions to my family relating to their personal preferences when in the face of death. My family has always held relatively private attitudes towards death. When my grandmother passed away, each member of my family went to our separate rooms and dealt with our own emotions separately and never addressed the death with support from each other. Looking back, all our attitudes have all drastically changed as a result of my dad’s health issues; our family is now very supportive of each other and we tackle emotional setbacks as a team.…
