Judith Ortiz Cofer's Poem Latin Women

In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s poem Latin Women Pray imagery is used. The title alone having the word Latin immediately makes the reader picture a Latino woman. As the poem continues it says God, “Looks down upon his brown daughters” (Cofer 7). This again, helps the reader depict the appearance of the Latin women. I believe that Cofer uses imagery to show how different that Latin culture can be. She also is describing the adjustment Latino’s may face when coming into the American culture when they hope that God, “At least be bilingual” (Cofer 16).
Dear John Wayne written by Louise Erdrich has many similes used throughout. “Who die beautifully, tumbling like dust weeds,” is a simile used to describe the Indians who are trying to save their land (Erdrich

Hinton used in The Outsiders were similes, hyperboles, and idioms. “Figurative language is using figures of speech to be more effective, persuasive and impactful” (Literary Devices 1). Similes are literary devices that compare an item to another while using “like” or “as.” One of the many similes in The Outsiders is “[...]eat like horses[...]” means that they eat a lot, like horses do (Hinton 131).…

The portrayal of minority groups is always difficult to represent in one aspect, let alone multiple. This can be applied when lesbian or other LGBTQ writers express their experiences through multiple lenses of intersectionality. One can see herself as an impoverished ethnic lesbian, but only be acknowledged for one at a time depending on the community she is talking to. Also, when one is not the ‘ideal type’ for her identification groups, those she wishes to relate to can further reject her. Gloria Anzaldua is a Chicana lesbian woman from Native American descent and writes of her struggles.…

“The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria.” By definition, stereotype is grouping races and individuals together and make judgement about them without knowing them. Most common stereotype remarks are racial, sexual, and gender wise. For instance, the common and absurd misconception that if you’re a lesbian you hate men, or if you’re Arab you must be a terrorist, or if you’re a Latina woman you must be a “hot tamale or sexual firebrand” (par 6).…

What we call imagery in Ortiz’s poem does not always do this. The imagery he uses is seemingly transparent, never using metaphors, as if they are symbols instead. The next example of imagery, or what we could call a symbol, is when he says “I remember the soft damp sand/in my hand” (12). Here Ortiz wants us to visualize what his experience was with his father, but he doesn’t want us to only see the imagery, but to understand its texture as well. The texture is soft, but he really isn’t describing the texture of the sand, he is describing the softness of his father which shows us the love and connection between the two.…
