Kanye West: The Hero's Journey

Improved Essays
Many modern day celebrities and leaders are able to follow the hero's Journey to get to the point that they are at today. Kanye West is one of those people who went through the trials to reach the success he is at today, but it sure wasn’t an easy journey.
Kanye Omari West was born on June 8th, 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia. Kanye’s parents got divorced when he was three and he rarely saw his father. Kanye soon moved to China when he was ten, where his mother was visiting a professor. This can relate to the hero's journey unusual birth section. Much like Telemachus, Kanye did not have a father figure growing up, and moving to china for a year is pretty unusual especially for someone his age.

Aside from being GQ's Man Of The Year twice, being one of the biggest names in hip-hop, debuting his own clothing, jewelry, and shoes line, and being TIME's most influential person of the year, Kanye is also married and a proud father of two. He also stands for many LGBT and African American rights as well as having a net worth of $120 million. This can be compared to Odysseus defeating the suitors in the hall. Odysseus had doubters just like Kanye did, and at the end of the day, they both ended up on top.
After all the trials, Kanye is able to keep making music and continue his hero's journey with his loving family, just like Odysseus. Hero´s come in all shapes and sizes; gay, straight, black, white, boy, girl, anything. Kanye proves that although he didn’t fight Scylla and the Charybdis or fight of a giant cyclops, he still went through trials, and troubles to get him to the success and happiness he´s at today. Some call Kanye cocky; I call him confident. Some call him a stupid rapper; I call him inspiring. Some call him a loser; I call him a

Tupac Shakur was born in 1971 in New York to two Black Panther activists; you could say social justice ran in his blood. Tupac grew up surrounded by poverty, drugs, and crime but wanted to make a better life for himself, so he did. He became a rapper and in his songs and lyrics he would talk about social issues, for example “Brenda’s Got a Baby” is a song about teen pregnancy and the inability to raise a child, and “Dear Mama”, a song where Tupac discusses poverty and drug addiction in his family. Another example is “Changes”. Tupac’s “Changes” is about the mistreatment of African Americans with references to police brutality and and the War on Drugs that uses a piano melody for reflective tone and is a relevant song for today because these…
