Although social location has a great effect towards interactions with people coming from different areas, sooner or later, individuals will learn to acknowledge and open to new structures of language, as a result creating comfort within each other.
Mexico serves as a neighboring country to SoCal which is also a big influence why there is more Chicano talk and accent in my speech. Although there are Hispanics who live in NorCal, their speech does not consist of Spanglish or Chicano English; their speech is more precise and clear. Thus, it is evident how “language from a state of change” (Spreng 2017) where in this case, the Mexican language begins to associate with Southern California talk and people’s word choice. In this case, coming to a new environment meant adapting to a new form of speech, it being the articulation of words, emphasis on words or saying certain words or phrases which included “shifts in the sound system” (Cran, 2014). This would mean words like “do” would be pronounced more like “dew” caused by “words that have oo in them in California English” (Cran, 2014).
