How well does your family communicate? Family-whether of origin or procreated, communication is inevitable. The following depicts theories and aspects that I learned in Family Communication instructed by Dr. Shelley.
Learning Aspects
Important. The most important information that I learned was that a family system may take years to evolve and “gain similarity in interpreting and responding to each other’s behaviors” (Shelley). Moreover, I learned that it will take a lot of time for my ex-husband and I to learn how to effectively communicate with and treat one another. Hopefully, both of us have the patience and can commit to improving our relationship towards one another.

From writing the probes, I discovered that I need to example better communication skills and techniques towards my family members. Likewise, I learned ways to improve my relationships with family members by simply, communicating.
Benefits. As much as I enjoy writing probes, I think the probes for Family Communication were not as sufficient as previous probe assignments. For example, when the class discussed theoretical perspectives, we talked about boundaries. However, none of the probes referenced boundaries.
Family System. My family is best described as being a single-parent family and having an open system of communication. Moreover, my family needs to include better communication skills to achieve excellence. The structure of my family’s system could use some updating, which shall improve the stability and behavior of my family’s wholeness.
Recommendations. To improve my family’s communication system, I believe we should incorporate more “everyday interactions”, “traditions” and “celebrations” into our lives (Shelley). These “family rituals are repeated, patterned communication events in the family” (p. 1). Furthermore, my family should adapt well to additional daily interactions together, which will strengthen our cohesion as a
