They are glad that their children have healthy snacks that reinforce what they try to teach them at home. Although school officials support the new changes they do have some concerns. A specific concern is the fact that if they follow all regulations given they would lose money. According to www.usnews.com Sandra Ford who is the director of food and nutrition services for Manatee County School District in Florida stated that getting rid of snack items could disturb a school budget that was already tight. Companies such as Snapple Co, Pepsi Co, and Coca-Cola, encourage the movement. As far as advertisement schools also have to remove all of scoreboards, posters, and bulletins that promote unhealthy snacks. They have to be replaced by healthier products. Those rules also apply to the school hallways.
I feel as though banning unhealthy snacks from school sends a good message but does not solve the problem. Seeing as though students can still bring in their own food, eat at the concession stands after school and eat their normal lunches they still have access to eat what they want. Some schools also have popular restaurant chains in the cafeteria for students to purchase if they don’t want to eat the school provided lunches. They have restaurants like Panda Express, Subway, Pizza Hut, and Bosco Sticks in high schools now.
Most school lunches consist of unhealthy foods such as pizza and pasta and not the nutritious things children need throughout the day. I feel as though it serves as a contradiction to ban junk food from vending machines yet serve the student’s unhealthy lunches and allow them to bring in outside food. I think they should have the choice to eat what they want and not be forced to have something they don’t want. If you’re going to make it into a healthy trend then all of the food that they intake during their school hours should be reasonably healthy
