I am a focused young man, with a spirit of perseverance, and despite having adversities within my young life, they have not harmed my character, nor the goals that I have on the road towards my future success. I am looking forward with an optimistic mind that I will be so fortunate as to receive this scholarship, it will stand to be a major impact on my journey towards pursuing an active and productive role within society, as well as being a positive role model within my culture.

Johnnie Ruth Clarke’s legacy by improving myself academically, therefore I can help better the community. This year I received an invitation from my school to become a mentor to a struggling ninth grade student, I take that invite with great integrity, as I was a struggling student at one time, and I was blessed enough to turn myself around. I want to be a positive influence and share my experiences with others, so we all can succeed.
In addition, I’ve been active within my community in many ways throughout the years, I’ve volunteered in elementary classrooms, as well as working with younger children in activities such as, wrestling and Taekwondo. When I was in seventh grade, my brother was having difficulty in fourth grade, and I would come into his class to volunteer along with assisting his teacher, it helped my brother do better in school, and it made me feel proud to know that I was a positive source of encouragement to him and the class. I intend to continue being a positive influence on my younger siblings in addition to my

Dear Carolyn Boles Scholarship Committee, I have had a great first semester in college full of learning and meeting new people. I studied extremely hard the entire semester and was determined to get the best grades possible. My favorite class was psychology and I received a very good grade in the class, so I was asked to become a mentor for the class next school year. I also decided to work toward receiving a minor in health psychology because I loved the class so much. In another one of my classes, we learned about different health field careers in order to decide if nursing was right for us since it is such a competitive major at IUPUI.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

I think I should be a part of Mortar Board because I have spent the entirety of my college career working to strengthen my skills in leadership and build on my character. I am very dedicated to my studies, and I make it a priority to excel in all of my classes. While I am already involved in many activities on campus, I am always careful to decide whether I have the time to give to a new organization before joining. I am well aware of the time requirements and level of commitment that would be expected of me as a member of Mortar Board, and I am both able and willing to commit. I think I would be a great addition to Mortar Board because scholarship, leadership, and service are all aspects of my life that are very important to me.…

The values and standards of National Honor Society are the four important pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. A person needs to represent all four pillars to uphold the honor of National Honor Society, just like a table with four legs must balance a table. I have developed through the years to be a strong leader, holding the table of scholarship, leadership, service, and character and I would be so very honored to hold this leadership with National Honor Society. Scholarship is holding myself to a high standard, academically and socially. Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

To promote the Gilman Scholarship and international education, I would like to visit my old high school and give a presentation to inform students interested in learning a foreign language on what it’s like to study abroad. In order to do so, during my time in China, I will take many pictures and recollect memories that could inspire students to ignore the challenges of learning a new language from scratches and motivating them to adventure the world and the many opportunities given to the ones that decide to leave behind their comfort zone and learn something new, I want to let students know about my experience to help demonstrate to students what it is like to live in a different country and learn how other cultures work, to show them the beauty of learning about others culture and their social statistics. I hope that by sharing my experience abroad I will help inspire students to learn a second language and even study abroad themselves.…
