Life jackets are usually filled with foam which is light and can displace a lot of water compared to it’s weight. The life jacket floats because the foam that is inside the life jacket is light which means it doesn’t have to displace a lot of water. Also because our bodies already have some buoyancy the life jacket doesn’t need to support the whole weight of our bodies just enough to keep our heads above water.
