P1- The novel suggests what is significant about story telling is that it gives you the experience to imagine anything you want, the way you want it. Tim says in the story that story telling brings the dead alive and brings his girlfriend Linda back to life when in reality, she's dead. "Lying in bed at night, I made up elaborate stories to bring Linda alive in my sleep. I invented my own dreams. It sounds impossible, I know, but I did it." (O'Brien, 230) With the way he can bring his friends from war or his friends from childhood back alive is through story telling and it's important because even when these people are gone, they are still here. Tim had to lie in this book quite often because his story in Vietnam would not be interesting if he said it straight forward as if it happened. The stories would not be interesting if he said Kiowa was shot and died in the field, and then moved on to the next thing in war that happens to him. Tim wanted to spice the story up a little by adding things that never happened. "But, although the story I invented, it's still true, which is what fiction is all about. Uh, if I were to tell you the literal truth of what happened to me in the summer of nineteen sixty-eight, all I could tell you was that I played golf, and I worried about getting drafted. But that's a crappy story. Isn't it? It doesn't - it doesn't open any door to what I was feeling in the summer of nineteen sixty-eight."(O,Brien, Speech) Adding more things and more dramatic parts made the art of storytelling more intriguing and more interesting than it could have been if he told what happened in war straight up. So making up these little stories makes the story more interesting, but it also tells us how Tim felt during war. He didn't go to the river and decide to jump to the border or go and fight in the war, it just made the story interesting and made us feel his Tim was feeling when he received the draft notice during the war. The significance of storytelling was to spice the story up so we knew how he felt during the war and so we can relive memories and make new ones by
