Imagine this ! you and your friend go to the store he asks you if his outfit looks good, but you think it’s ugly what would you do. I firmly believe that lying is acceptable in our society.
Lying is acceptable if it creates more positive results than negative one. For example “ Anne frank survived as long as she did because those sheltering her and her family lied to the nazis” . (Time magazine,1) we are trying to create positive results and if they wouldn’t of lied to the nazis Anne frank would probably be dead, we should lie to protect others and make more positive results than negative ones. In addition “ ap-Ipsos poll,65 percent of those questioned said it was Sometimes ok to lie to avoid hurting someone’s feelings” (nbc news,2) lying is good, but only when you do it to protect others and be good friends we should be nice to the people we like and not make them feel bad. As children we were taught the good and the bad. We were taught to be good with others, to say please, and thank you, but more than anything to be honest. One of the biggest most unacceptable matter was to lie. We could not lie, no matter how big or how small it was, it is still considered to be bad, but what if one lie could turn to be something good.…

It is a way of escaping the reality of a problem or it is a last resort because you do not want to embarrass yourself by being honest. Moreover, the adage “honesty is the best policy” does not always ring true for many. Sometimes we have to lie in order to get to the truth. In Stephanie Ericsson’s “The Ways We Lie,” we find that lying is a natural and unavoidable act.…

If you ask most people do you think lying is acceptable, majority of them will not hesitate and tell you yes, and then give you multiple reasons on why lying is a bad thing. But if you actually sit down and think, everyone lies several times a day sometimes without even knowing it because the lie was so small and meaningless. Many would argue that no one has the right to decide for someone else whether or not they should be denied the truth because they may get offended. It may be considered evil to leave someone in the dark of something that could be completely life changing because, it they may not take it very well (161). Is it ok to lie in any situation, or is it just wrong to lie at all ? In four articles that I read, it states a couple of things, for example, they talk about lying and if it's bad, is lying sometimes good, and is lying good. I believe lying is only good sometimes and it should only be used in white lies. I think a good time to lie is when you protect someone. One scenario of this is the story of Ann Frank.this is a good example because they were protecting Ann and her family by saying that there was nothing upstairs.…

Then said person goes back to their school/work and talk about how it was a twenty point deer when it was really only a four point deer. The person still lied about something but it did not hurt or negatively effect someone. People also lie to help a friend like saying this person did this awesome act of kindness when he/ she really didn't do it.…

    1. According to Ericsson, we all lie because we want to avoid confrontation, spare people’s feelings, and to get out of particular situations. To avoid confrontations, sometimes it is necessary to lie, for example, if you were talking about someone behind their back and they hear about it, you are going to deny that you ever talked bad about that person to avoid getting into an alteration. If someone is wearing an ugly outfit that they are real proud of, you are most likely going to lie to them by telling that someone that you love their outfit just to avoid hurting their feelings.…

Most people will say that lying is never the answer, but they don’t always tell why. Lying often ends unethically, not only the can the lier be punished or feel guilty in the process, but it often goes further than anticipated. When looking back there seems to be more consequences on the result of the pretense than what the reward would have been if everything worked out and there was no lying. The Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthy Trials, and the McMartin Trials all proved that it is important to always be honest, regardless of the sacrifice.…

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

For example, if there is a person who does not like conflict, he or she may tell a lie to fix the problem (Ford 98-99). People will also lie to other people by leaving out less desirable information that might hurt the other person emotionally. Lisa Firestone wrote “Even lies told in the name of protecting others can leave you feeling pretty bad about yourself, because you don’t feel like an authentic, strong individual when you aren’t being honest” (Firestone). The most common reason that lies by omission are told is to prevent unpleasant situations from occurring, even if it causes one to feel guilty (Firestone). People who have a big heart or cannot stand the thought of hurting someone or embarrassing them typically will lie to the other person by leaving out the more displeasing details.…
