In the United States of America, there have been 1,607 mass shootings since the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre in Newton, Connecticut (Ella Nilsen, 2). Many women and children have died from these mass shootings and not one thing has been done to prevent them from occurring again. The United States government must create gun control laws that will make our country safer. Recently there has been a horrific tragedy in our country, the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. This shooting plus the students being activist and talking out on the issue, the national conversation about guns and gun control laws is becoming more prominent (Carol Costello, 1). Students across the country are out participating in marches and protests to help raise awareness of the situation. A few days after the Florida school shooting, “students protested outside of the White House, lying on the ground to symbolize the Parkland students killed.” Occurring within the next month are two more protests, “the National School Walkout on March 14 and the March for Our Lives

The government usually just sends out kind words and condolences to the students and families, but now they are talking about creating gun laws that will help prevent mass shootings. In Congress, there are two bills being voted on one is a ban on bump stocks, and the other is the “bipartisan Fix NICS Act.” A bump stock is a device that makes a semiautomatic gun fully automatic, which increases the firing rate on the gun. These bump stocks lead to deadlier shootings and more casualties. The Fix NICS Act will enforce the rule of reporting criminal records which are continuously not reported (Ella Nilsen, 2).
