This subordinate class of Americans represented by the two patients on the episode of Grey’s Anatomy showcases what happens when someone comes from the lower economic class, and how this can lead to a poor quality of life, such as obesity and poor medical care. While these television dramas are intended to entertain, they sometimes unintentionally draw attention to fact that health is often a commodity, and that the poor and disenfranchised are often pre disposed as well as more likely to have poor diet, and live and work in unclean or un safe places and because many poor, especially minorities, “have less economic power, so they bear a great deal of the burden of poor health. …show more content…
More often than not, programs like Grey’s Anatomy choose sensationalization, and dramatic tension rather than attempting anything close to realism. Even when these programs feature a real world, frequently encountered issue like obesity, this is played for laughs and to illicit disgust from the viewer, essentially dehumanizing the patient and making light of what should, in a real life hospital be taken very seriously. Also, underlining issues like the disproportionate healthcare system that favors the middle and upper class are not represented, at least not intentionally.
