Michael Jordan said, “You miss 100% of the shots you never take.” Michael Jordan is one of the best basketball players of all time. Now imagine the world without basketball. Basketball started as just a fun sport that was very simple and wasn’t a huge deal and turned into a multi-billion dollar sport. James Naismith is the one who brought this amazing sport to life. James Naismith is the man who invented basketball. He was born in a city near Ontario Canada on November 6th, 1861. He passed away after quite a long life. He had a heart attack on November 28th, 1939 at the age of 78 years old.
Mr. Naismith was a gym teacher and loved playing outdoor games with his class. In Canada they don’t exactly have warm weather all year round so James decided to come up with a game to play indoors during the winter. Without basketball simple things like having something to do during the winter season would not happen. Not only that but basketball has created many athletes like Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. These two men are not only athletes but were and still are great role models for thousands of kids and adults everywhere. The industry of basketball has made billions of dollars for other industries like sports drinks(gatorade) and the shoe industry. Overall the most important thing that basketball has done for especially The United States is it keeps kids that are live in maybe a bad neighborhood off the streets, not doing drugs, and staying away from violence. When James first was given the job to come up with a new sport he was given 2 weeks. At first when Mr. Naismith showed his students the sport they all thought the idea of basketball was stupid and dragged themselves onto the court.
