1. Individual Component: Profile Patricia June O’Shane was born in 1941 into an interracial family (a rarity for that period), at a time when it was common practice for the removal of children from their families where it was deemed children were being neglected (McIntyre & McKeich, 2009). The removals often triggered children to feel disconnected with their culture/traditional ways and their family’s history (Cowlishaw, 2004). Both of Patricia’s grandparents had been removed from their families, which she believes is why her grandfather encouraged his grandchildren to question what they believed to be wrong in the world (O 'Shane, Miller, Miller, & O 'Shane, 2010).…

For my critical thinking assignment, I was asked about the functions and dysfunctions of immigration. I was also asked to tell my family’s root story and to consider how my ancestors arrived in the United States. As well as how other immigrant groups influenced and shaped my family’s past. I will answer the questions about my family to the best of my ability, because of the limited knowledge I have on them.…
James McBride, who was the writer The Color of Water, is a great example on the hardships of racism. McBride tells us of how he and his mother were faced with struggles and still prospered though because It does not matter if he is considered Jewish or Christian; It does not matter if he is considered black or white, all that matters is that you must advance.…

In Native Son, by Richard Wright, the protagonist character learns that various factors, such as race and heritage, can greatly influence a person’s life. This is demonstrated through character motivation, conflict, ethos, and symbolism. These elements are illustrated by Wright’s indigent character, who is obstinate to reach his goal and persevere through any obstacles that he may face. Character motivation, conflict, and ethos are all illustrated through the protagonist character, Bigger Thomas, who is portrayed as a very motivated black man, who encounters a variety of problems in Chicago’s 1930s. On page 87, paragraph 3, Wright states, “She was dead and he had killed her.…

Imagine you are at an art museum and you find yourself in the abstract art section, the cubism, surrealism, fauvism. You gaze at the paintings with confusion, questions, and wonder trying to figure out what they mean. You look around and catch a glimpse of others around you with similar expressions. These sights of confusion, questions, and wonder are constants in my life. Similar to an abstract painting, people are confused by my appearance, and yet I have no discombobulated body like a Picasso or Dalí paintings.…
“White” Like Me At the heart of American culture is the concept of racism; a continuous cycle perpetuated through years of injustice by slavery, violence, segregation, and hatred. Much like the symbolic “tree of life”, racism’s roots extend deep into the earth, drawing sustenance from each member of society. Yet in that survival tactic, it unconsciously steals a little more from one side—this is white privilege. “White privilege” is a mere social construction by which the dominant white group justifies their advantages and higher quality of life through diminution of people of color. To be a member of the white race, it is easy to overlook subtle inequalities—such as the wealth gap, career opportunities, education, etc.…
People are always looking for their identity, whether it’s the one their parents created for them, or the one they built for themselves. Humans want to know their identity, just as the Ruth and James in The Color of Water, by James McBride, wanted. The book is called the Color of Water because James asked his mother, Ruth, if God was black or white, and she responded that “God is the color of water. Water doesn’t have a color” 1. This is a pinnacle moment because it shows the reader that identity may not only be about the color of one’s skin, but also the disposition of a person.…
Scaffolding Essay1: Rhetorical Analysis Nell Bernstein ’s essay Goin’ Gangsta, Choosin’ Cholita seeks to examine the complexities of ethnic identity, and to evaluate the concept of claiming an ethnicity one was not born into. Bernstein explores the differing perspectives several Californian teens and young adults have regarding personal ethnic identification. For many of them it’s a choice, and as Bernstein puts it, “identity is not a matter of where you come from, what you were born into, what color your skin is.…

Madison O’Toole Events Every time I look in the mirror, I’m reminded of my heritage. My entire life, I’ve looked at my reflection and seen that small, square jaw, hailing from the highlands of Scotland. I’ve seen my extremely fair, pale skin, a dead giveaway for my Irish ancestry. Every day I’ve looked at the characteristic shape of my nose that I had never been able to put my finger on. For the past 18 years, I’d looked at these pieces of my lineage, knowing that I was mostly Scots-Irish, but never once thought about how they came to be.…
