The most important lesson I have drawn from the reading is it is not only important but necessary to understand the history of an organization to better be able to understand the events and issues that are current problems, inspire solutions to those problems, and prevent the repetition of wars, disputes, and tragedies. A major portion of the United States of America’s history is the military, who they are, how they came to be, what they have done, and what they are currently doing. Without the military, it is rather likely that America would not be America and would still be a colony of Great Britain instead. This is significant because this school was a post-graduate school and it was also the nation’s first preventative medicine/ public health school. Additionally, the Army Medical School also conducted research on various diseases and produced vaccines. Despite multiple subjects taking some time to develop or even be accepted, they still happened. Without the Nay’s contribution to commerce and ending the slave trade it is very much possible that the American people would not have such a large array of overseas trading partners. Also, there would be larger losses of life and property to pirates all over the world without the naval fleets being stationed in various locations. The Army has made contribution to public health and safety that has allowed the people to remain healthy despite constant travel of troops to and from overseas and the corps of engineers, although they are often seen as the villain, have done what they can to help prevent loss of life in the valleys of the Mississippi
