Taking Honors Biology in freshman year sparked a passion for biomedical sciences which has stuck with me over the past four years. This was enhanced by a Human Anatomy and Physiology course I took in 11th grade, where we learned about the how various human systems function. After taking this class, I decided to major in molecular biology, as I had only scratched the surface of the workings and biochemical interactions of cells, and was eager to continue learning. However, after a great work experience at a biomedical optics research lab and a summer course on engineering biomedical systems at Brown University, I developed an interest in studying the critical thinking and problem-solving approach to biology provided by a degree in Biomedical Engineering.

This program will allow me to delve into the microscopic physiology that keeps us alive and discover the technology and engineering practices that are advancing medicine. In addition, the University of Michigan’s breadth of teaching and consistency of excellence in all areas of study will allow me to pursue other interests, like language and cultural studies, with success. And their affordability and location made the choice even easier.
The lab experience I had this summer also greatly impacted my career goals. Before, I aspired to go to medical school and become a doctor in oncology. But after many lengthy discussions with the Professor I worked for, who earned his MD/Ph.D. and practices while researching and teaching at Harvard University, I was inspired to follow a similar path. My current plan is to get an MD/Ph.D. degree and do stem cell engineering research, as I believe there is a lot of potential in that field for solving major health
