I arrived at Easton School District’s Forks Elementary School at around 8:45 a.m. that morning, a few minutes before the children were let in for class, to observe a 4th grade classroom. The instructor for the class, Mrs. Powell met with me in the main office to walk me down to her classroom. I walked in Mrs. Turner’s Kindergarten class today is my last day observing this classroom. Mrs. Turner was going over the words sentences that the students formed the last time I observed which was on Monday about what they liked to do with their families. The students are sitting on the carpet; she had to tell the students to behave on the carpet. In developing my lesson, I was hyper-aware of the consequence of assuming what students may and may not know. I graduated and do a lot of my work in Fairfax County Schools; however, Prince William County schools and Osbourn Park High School run their English education quite differently. I think this explains my concern over checking with Mrs. Hakes what students may or may not have been exposed to in previous years. On November 28, 2017, I spent my fourth day with class 3-213 at P.S. 45. During this time, I felt I was able to confidently encounter, converse, and assist the children with varying subject matters. At this point, the children even felt comfortable enough to ask me for help. Additionally, my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Jessica Diaz, is still extremely helpful and even allows me to teach the students in small-groups. The film Hearts and Minds is a documentary made by Peter Davis in 1974 to portray America’s unethical involvement in Vietnam and examine the opinions of many by showing interviews and vivid footages. The film focuses more on those who were against the war than those who supported it. For the U.S. all that mattered was the victory.
