Music Classroom Observation

On the 26th of January, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop led by Kristen Lewis and Kate Klotz titled,”Boom, Boom, POW! Body Percussion and Hand Clapping Games for the K-8 Music Classroom.” This event took place at Colorado Music Education Association (CMEA) in Colorado Springs. The workshop audience consisted of approximately eighty Music Educators from all over Colorado who were energetic and eager to learn the songs and games being taught. Ms. Lewis and Ms. Klotz were energetic, prepared and fast paced throughout this workshop. They were very interactive with the audience and had a great pace which was not too fast or slow. The amount of songs and games they were able to present, explain and demonstrate was sufficient due to their limited time of fifty minutes and was extremely helpful for music educators.
This workshop was very focused on elementary levels and music. The songs and games that were presented were appropriate for students from kindergarten all the way through eighth grade. Not only was this a creative challenge, but it also was great for time management and active listening. If a student were to become distracted or bored during class, this activity would require the students to be extremely engaged. This activity is one that I would love to incorporate into my teaching. However, I would only do this activity with a class who had great behavioral skills as well as listening skills. If students who had poor behavior were attempting to create letters with their entire body, there could easily become an injury in the classroom. I would most likely incorporate this activity into a well behaved class of third graders or

    Today, fewer children before the age of seven participate in and receive the proper amount of playing musical instruments. For example, Tom Barnes mentions in his article, The Scientific Reason We Should Teach Music to Kids in School, that “85% of public school students have not received adequate musical instruction by the time they reach high school.” I think primary education could fix this problem if they provide more musical classes in their course plans.
