Life in Alaska is drastically different than my life growing up. Although I have lived in Missouri my whole life, I have always been aware of cultural differences with those who live elsewhere. My family tree stretches from Mexico to Alaska. Several years ago, my family made a trip up to Alaska for my Uncle’s wedding. During the trip, my family and I explored the life of an Alaskan.
I had been to Alaska previously to visit my uncle, both of which those times he had been too busy with work and barely seen us. This time, we were able to dive into my Uncle’s everyday lives more. During our trip my Uncle married a woman named Jamie, whose mother was native to Alaska. In addition to us there was also parts of Jamie’s family as well as her friends, many of which were not native Alaskans. Alaska is full of nature, covered with mountains and forests and surrounded by the ocean. Missouri is the total opposite. Instead of oceans, we have lakes. Instead of mountains, we have hills and fields. The scenery in Missouri is not the only thing that is different from Alaska, the activities there are very different as well. In Missouri, there aren't many outdoor activities to do. While we do have trail to hike and lakes to fish in, these activities just aren't as popular in Missouri. In Alaska going on these outdoor adventures through the mountains are part of everyone’s daily lives. To participate in these activities in Missouri you would be labeled as country, something not so popular in social views. But to do these things in Alaska you would just be participating in your cultural activities. In my social life, hunting and fishing are uncommon among my friends. Only one of my close friends regularly hunts. This further displays how much of a variety Missouri
