It says “Into our past, into the river crossing at five, into the spinach fields, into the plainview cotton rows, into tuberculosis wards, into braids and muslim dresses, sewn hard and taut to withstand the the thrashings of twenty five years.” (Pg 74) When she said “into braids and muslim dresses” we know she is muslim, and that her dress is a big part of her culture which is why it is pieced in the quilt.
