I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Also, making sure I am citing correctly after I have summarized the information can be an additional challenge but I think I am getting better at that.

Hi Molly,
I too find paraphrasing the hardest form of plagiarism to avoid. Trying to summarize what someone else said, who said it very intelligently is a challenge. I found it easier if I pick out the key words in the information I am trying to summarize and then put my thoughts together. Making sure you cite the work properly is key. Sometimes when we are summarizing we don’t realize it is pretty close to what the author has already stated so making sure we cite our writing will prevent us from

Uploaded to the Smrt English YouTube channel, “How to Write a Summary” by Canadian College of English language teacher, Shaun Macleod, provides tips on how to write an effective summary. A summary is a brief account of a topic or event, focusing on the main points, in order for someone who is unfamiliar with the material to have a clear understanding. Macleod stresses clarity and conciseness when writing a summary, instructing viewers to leave out specifics unless it is essential to comprehending the subject. One key strategy suggested for maintaining brevity as well as clarity, is to paraphrase, which is explaining the words of a speaker or writer without the use of direct quotation. Another strategy Macleod discusses is being objective, stating…

We all can agree that wherever we go, we are told to not copy anyone’s work and to be original. Everyone gets ideas from other people and builds upon that which can make it hard to understand what can be plagiarism and what is not. This last issue with plagiarism that Gladwell described really puts the issues writers face into the light. People can write about anything, but what they do not realize is that somewhere it has been written before in a separate way and somewhere down the line somebody else will write about the same thing in their own unique…

In regards to my writing process, there have been some central strategies that I have developed over time and some strategies that I have had for as long as I can remember. For example, one skill that I have developed from high school has been to annotate, mark up, and take notes throughout my readings. I found that taking notes really helps me, not only to remember what I read but to go back and be able to point out something in my reading easily. In addition, it helped me understand the readings better.…

Have You Developed a System of Writing That Works Most of The Time I really have not looked up different styles of writing let alone realized there was so many different types of it. My method is not necessarily a method per se, I have always for the longest time just wrote down as if I was speaking to someone. That to me was where my biggest praise came from, that I was able to write with such voice and was able to emulate my presence through the pages. When writing for an essay there is a period where I read and reread the question to gather all the information that is needed. Once the question is fully understood, I try to explain myself in full detail.…

In my first writing, “Gladwell’s Missing Factor”, I was able to deeply analyze the theories Malcolm Gladwell wrote in his book, Outliers. As well as bring outside evidence of a current class I was enrolled. As a writer, I was able to construct strong arguments to capture my reader’s attention.…

Plagiarism is an occurrence whereby a person employs or closely replicates the language and opinions of an author without approval, and represents the work of the author as his or her own, by failing to credit the original author ("The Definition of Plagiarism"). Individuals who plagiarize risk ruining their careers and reputations, and in some extreme cases, face the danger of being arraigned in court and parting with large sums of money in the form of compensation to the affected authors (Smith). In light of this, it is recommended that plagiarism should be avoided at all times. Plagiarism manifests in different forms all of which are severe violations of academic integrity and have severe consequences in the end.…
