By the 2030’s, every car in the United States may be driverless. This is assuming the “best case scenario” that the majority of drivers give up the reigns to their choice to drive. With how inconsistent human driving is and how dangerous accidents can be, it sounds like a rational idea to let technology take over this aspect of society. In fact, the developments are only going to get better in 20 years. There are possibilities of unwarranted, negative societal changes that could sprout from the banning of human driving, and the enforcing of autonomous driving. A Negative outcome of driverless cars becoming the only legal form of road transportation is the fact that they have to completely rely on technology, causing them to become vulnerable to system failures. Take GPS for example, a core part of how driverless cars work, that is fundamentally inconsistent due to the many variables that could offset its accuracy. Developers of driverless cars tend to be public companies such as Google and Tesla. Consider such possibilities that these autonomous vehicle companies be bought or influenced by such commercial giants that they get paid to blacklist certain locations of competitors. Even worse still is the idea that they could force larger payments for transportation to certain public places. Radically authoritarian governments could also manipulate their destinations as a means of control, like as if they were to stop a vehicle on demand. If the public service vehicles use identification for payments, it could also lead to an invasion of privacy of servers storing destinations of many individuals.
