An important lesson can be taken away from this opening part of the book. Nick’s father is teaching him to not judge someone without knowledge of their past because those could be less fortunate than expected. This quote shows that Nick was taught to be a caring person for others and doesn’t usually get caught up in himself. It also provides a foreshadowing to how Nick will act as a narrator for the story. He was very clever in the way he chose how and when to deliver information about different characters throughout the novel. You see this in his way of providing vague details at one point and then quickly shifting to those involving diminishing circumstances that disguise unflattering actions.
