In North Carolina there are laws about wearing a seatbelt, and using the correct car seat. Unfortunately, there are many people who do not obey these laws. My mom, my little sister, and I were trick-or-treating. We had just left Carthage and were headed to see my older sister in Westmoore. We were almost there, then our bodies were slung forward and there was smoke everywhere. We had just been hit by a van head on. We were all wearing seatbelts, I was in a booster seat, and my sister was in a car seat. My mom’s leg had been broken, my sister had internal damage to her liver, and the lap belt had cut me open. The cut required seven stitches on the inside and eight stitches on the outside. After the wreck we were told how the seat belts and appropriate car seats had saved our lives. If my mom had not been wearing her seatbelt, the impact would have sent her through the front windshield. The backseat of the car had somehow come unattached. The seat was just sitting freely in the car. Our seatbelts and carseats kept my sister and I in place. Had we not of used either the seat would have gave up on us and killed us. Our seatbelts and carseats are why we are all here

At this time, I honestly believed that I knew it all and was always in the right; I would ignore anyone trying to guide me towards the right path or give me advice. As in the short story “Rain of Fire” by Evan Thomas, I would have never expected that a regular day could end up in such catastrophe. I learned not to trust those whom I have not gotten to know well enough.…
