Page Break Ken Kesey's novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, illustrated many of the society's problems in the 1960s after being published in 1962. Kesey's novel went into detail about the mental institutions and how the patients were treated in an insane asylum in Oregon. Events that happened to Kesey throughout his childhood and adult life reflect within the novel and help give the reader insight into what life was really like in the 1960s. His personal experiences through his jobs reveal some of the dark spots of mental health during this time period. Ken Kesey explains the harsh treatment of patients in the 1960's mental institutions through his personal experiences while growing up from his childhood to the day he died, which helped aid Kesey in writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

After gathering research on Kesey, one can learn how he enjoyed using drugs, and how his experimentation reflects on the drug use by the main character in the novel.
