Yi Munyol’s novel Our Twisted Hero presents two dynamic characters, Sokdae and Pyongt’ae, who could possibly fit the title. Sokdae, who has strong qualities of a leader, manipulates his classmates to maintain his power and keep order. On the other hand, Pyongt’ae starts off determined to defeat Sokdae’s scheming unjust ways. However, after a while, Pyongt’ae becomes submissive to Sokdae in order to gain better social levels. Although he abandons his initial intention to fight Sokdae’s cruel and unfair order, Pyongt’ae is heroic because his inherent choice is to go against the group and to challenge injustice. Ultimately, Pyongt’ae’s heroism has failed because he becomes morally twisted, losing his soul and life direction.
