Introduction
1.1. Rationale and significance
Among Jane Austen’s works, we can see the heroes and heroines she describing all have exquisite characteristic, and each person reacts with himself typical personality. In western literature, characters have flat one and round one. “Flat character” refers to ordinary person with simple and flat personality, and he usually is supporting player, like servant or poor worker. On the contrary, “round character” is much more complicated and has complexity in characterization. This kind of character has various features, characteristic, and more inside conflict. That is to say, round character not only has much more outstanding trait,but overpasses the one on common person in actual life.
As for Darcy, compared with Elizabeth, he has experienced the process from being proud to mild. And this transformation makes this character more stereoscopic. Then this thesis is going to explore

Research questions
This thesis concentrates on three questions:
1) Why is Darcy so proud? Darcy’s pride doesn’t come from nowhere. Many factors are involved, such as family, social status and culture influence. And all these make us have to admit that Darcy isn’t proud for no reasons.
2) What makes him so hateful for Elizabeth at the beginning? Darcy’s pride draws many people’s misunderstandings, and draws Elizabeth’s prejudice, without exception. Though born in an ordinary family, is an intelligent and independent girl. She could not stand Darcy’s contempt.
3) What does he do to eliminate Elizabeth’s prejudice toward him? Man can do everything out of love. Darcy realizes his own improper manner when he is in love with Elizabeth, and to win her love, Darcy decides to do something different.
