One experience that shaped my character as a person was my part-time job in high school. I worked as tour guide in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Being a tour guide pushes a person to be open minded and curious about other people. I remember having a tour group from New York City, and we had a great conversation when we were comparing our respective Chinatowns. The conversation had me continuously think of questions and reply to their question with an answer to the best of my ability.…

I first heard about UHD from my sister who had nothing but good things to say about the university, then I was reigned in by Dr. Mari Nicholson of the university Honors Program. As the end of high school approached I knew that making the move from Louisiana to Texas to attend UHD would not be a mistake. Growing up I always looked up to the ambassadors at each level of education because to me they always represented the cream of the crop. If someone wanted to know something the ambassadors were the ones they went to.…

Growing up as the middle child in a lower income family was, at best, difficult. Abusive parents, rampant drug use, and less than caring family members left me in a precarious position as a child. Was this how every family interacted? Is this what I was to become? Growing up I was always told that I would never amount to anything and given little chance to succeed.…

The mission of CBYX is to engage American teenagers. To let them experience, and educate language and culture of Germany without the lenses of stereotypes. I can contribute to the mission of CBXY by sharing the experiences that I will have in Germany with people within my community. Most of my peers at school have only traveled to neighboring states, and have never gone outside of the Southern region of the United States. By going to Germany I would be able to bring new ideas and culture directly to them instead of hearing of it through second-hand resources.…

One particular experience that has helped me to grow as a person and challenged me was when I had to opportunity to go to Nicaragua on a medical mission trip. On this trip I was able to spend a week in Nicaragua helping to administer aid to these wonderful people who were simply unable to receive even basic medicines or treatment. This opportunity did push me outside of my comfort zone because at the time I had never travelled outside of the United States before so travelling to a third-world country was quite daunting. When on any trip similar to this one you must be independent. A fellow teammate can’t constantly lead you around or watch you because everyone has to be doing their job.…
