During World War II, America was involved in a bombing campaign with Japan. This was because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was a United States naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii. The bombing of Pearl Harbor took place on December 7th, 1941. This destroyed 20 American naval vessels, 8 battleships, killed more than 2,500 people, and wounded many others. The United States wanted to avenge Japan, so they used precision bombing. Precision bombing was not successful, and “fire-bombing” created a little more success but not enough to end the war with Japan.

An American B-29 bomber, in the plane named Enola Gay, traveled from Tinian Island in the Pacific to the city of Hiroshima. This atomic bomb was given the nickname of the “Little Boy”. When the bomb touched ground, it exploded with the same force as 15,000 tons of TNT. The center of the explosion had a temperature of around 3500 degrees. This is three times hotter than volcanic lava and was why this bomb was able to burn down anything in its path. The explosion caused many fires which burned around 67 percent of Hiroshima. It also caused an instant death of around 70,000
