Anacortes consists of approximately 16,000 residents and Anacortes High School currently has 790 students enrolled. As I sat in the taxi on the day I arrived in Seville, I was admiring the scenery; the bushes were well groomed, the buildings came in all shapes and sizes, and on every corner I spotted a Spaniard walking their dogs. The tantalizing aroma of oranges hit me as I exited the taxi and walked towards my final destination, which would be my home for the next three months. Coming into Geneseo during the summer was something I was not looking forward to. I wanted to just jump into the school year and saw the summer as a waste of time. At the end of the summer I was wrong, and I at this point couldn’t be more thankful that I was able to be apart of it. Following with the INTD class into the school year I just saw it as another class that I just had to pass. What I didn't realize was how much I would learn about myself throughout the summer and fall semester.…

A Hero's Journey The last month of summer before my junior year started was occupied with pondering and wondering what I wanted to accomplish during the upcoming school year. Sure, junior year sounds like a blast, filled with fun memories and friends. But it also doubles as approaching the cliff of adulthood that I would hit in two short years. Every step I take my junior and senior year will be one step closer to that ledge.…

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

For most people asking for a Capri-Sonne is not a defining moment in their existence, for me that sliver colored squishy pouch of fruit juice with grapes that looked like purple miniature beach balls etched in the middle was the object that lured me into the world of speaking German. I was 2 years old when my mother received a phone call from my father exclaiming that the Army had assigned him to William O. Darby Kaserne and later that month our family, would be uprooted from suburban Seattle and replanted in a rural yet medieval Nuremberg, Germany. Thus far, my world as I knew it had been a two-story cream-colored house with white trimming occupied by nuclear family, my two elder brothers, Hiram, 6 and Theodore, 4, my mother and father. In this world there existed only one language, English and only one me.. After a grueling 20-hour flight, stopping in Detroit, New York, London, Frankfurt and finally Nuremberg.…

Writers statement My narrative is called Rumours and it’s intended audience is for people aged thirteen and over because of the mild alcohol references used in the story. The purpose of this story is very subtle but is intended to say that people can change no matter what their past was like. I created my narrative the way I did because I wanted it to be relatable to teenagers but still show the difference between bad behaviour and good behaviour. For example, Addison Taylor doing the right thing, being the protagonist and Sydney Grace being the antagonist doing the wrong thing. I called my narrative Rumours because teenagers are generally interested in gossip and rumours in within their friend groups so I thought that it would attract teenage…
