Personal Narrative: Firefighters

Improved Essays
It all started when I was in about fourth grade. A group of firefighters came to my school for a presentation. I remember vividly an intimidatingly burly fire marshall telling I don’t remember much about it, except that they told each of us that we needed an escape plan in case of a fire. I remember a story my mom had told me many times about a fire that devastated her family when she was a little girl. It made me shake in my shoes. I was a girl with a mission when I went home.
After school that day, my mind was racing. How would I come up with a plan? What would my escape route be? All the way home on the bus, ideas were running circles in my brain. My dad was a teacher and my mom worked later at her job at a doctor’s office, so it was usually just the two of us when we got home from school. As I was constructing my makeshift escape route, I couldn’t let my dad know my plan until I knew it would work. He would be so proud of me, coming up with such a genius solution to this problem! Maybe he’d even tell the fire department and I’d get some kind of award! So, As a result, I locked my bedroom door while I tied several bedsheets together, tied them to my bedpost, took off the screen in my window and threw the sheets outside. My “escape rope” just about reached the ground, and I knew I could jump the rest of the way. I had it made! All I had to do was climb out the window and down the rope of

During my high school career, I have been volunteering my time at Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue as a junior firefighter. As a fourteen-year old junior, I could not take classes, participate in all of the firefighting activities, and had more restrictions than a regular firefighter. So for my first year of involvement with the department I was not very active, I only attended trainings on Thursdays and occasionally helped with extra fire department lead events. During those trainings though, I learned from observing what the more experienced firefighters were doing and what they were teaching. Slowly I absorbed some of the basics of firefighting and other duties that the department is responsible for, so when I turned sixteen and was able to participate…

For many parents, the birth of a new child brings joy and glee. However for my father, I was a burden made by his late-night illegal activities. West Englewood is an area many people have not heard of - it’s tucked inside the southwest side of Chicago. During the day, the people of Englewood would wake up to the smell and sound of gunshots and burning tyres. Police officers would parade the streets in their well-ironed uniforms and the alleys would be covered with bright and colourful graffiti of sayings and images, which I didn’t understand at the time.…
