Personal Narrative: How My Mom Changed My Life

Improved Essays
Throughout my life I have gone through situations that changed me in both positive and negative ways. Growing up, my mother always tried so hard for us and that caused her to be gone often because of work. My step father was a drunk and very abusive toward her. My older sister had lots of problems, some of which included bipolar disorder, depression, and on some level, insanity. It was normal for a domestic dispute to erupt at least every day and every so often it would require police intervention. Most times it caused us to get kicked out of our home and we never occupied a home for over a year.
At a very young age I witnessed many dramatic things happen all in our household. The first time I saw violence, I was only seven years old, I watched my step-father punch, slap, and drag my mother by her hair across rocks. I tried to understand why, why these kinds of things happen, and why my mother? I had so many questions and very little answers. Watching my mother get abused caused me to be afraid of growing up, I couldn't imagine going through what she went through.

She became furious, or scared, so she taped my wrists, ankles, and mouth, so that I wouldn't get

Mom was small, a slight 110 pounds but through my eyes, she was large, even after my height surpassed hers. To this day, she would argue that she weighed only 100. When I first learned of this assignment my first thought was to interview my mom. She is the one person in my life I am closest to. Since we are only twenty three years apart, I thought it would be best to focus on her life up to the point where she decided to have kids. After making the move from North Liberty, Iowa, to Henderson, Nevada, my then family of four stayed in a small apartment on Green Valley Parkway.
