Personal Narrative: Moving To The Boat

Decent Essays
We were pulling into the boat dock after a long day of fishing, but someone was already there so we had to pull into the other side and wait. My dad went to go back the car down, and my mom, brother, and I were in charge of moving the boat to the other side. My mom told us to push it away from the dock and start to guide it over to the right side. The next thing I knew the line went slack and we all began to look at each other because we knew what had just happened, the clip on the rope broke and the boat was now floating backwards into the middle of the lake. We looked at each other frozen trying to figure out who was going in after it. Finally, my mom jumped in and swam to the boat, successfully re clipping the rope to the boat and swam it

Twenty-two years ago on January 4th, 1994, Taryn Staley was up at Finny Cumberlane to celebrate Gary’s, Taryn’s brother, fifteenth birthday. It was her mom, her step dad, her friend (Amy), Gary, her mom’s friend, four or five of Gary’s friends, and herself who traveled up the Finny Cumberlane mountain side. Their day was spent playing in the snow and snowboarding on the small, snow-capped mountain, but the day took a turn for the worse on their way home. “At 10:00 AM everyone met at our house in Burlington with their snowboarding gear, extra clothes, etc. We also loaded up a camp stove, pans, cups, cocoa and a pot of chile with freetos dip chips for lunch.…

“A leader has to watch every word he or she says and quickly learns that you can’t go through life without a few critics, some well deserved” (pg. 5), this quote as some of the beginning words from MacDonald truly shows that a leader has responsibilities to uphold to. I found it interesting that he showed these responsibilities are not only external, but internal as well. Many do not realize the internal battles that leaders in ministry go through, and in order for leaders to handle a situation in a mature manner; they must uphold to the responsibilities of character they are expected to maintain. There are many internal and external expectations of leaders that are specified in Building Below the Waterline, but only some really stood out to me as factors that I would practice more than others in my leadership positions.…

The next day, my legs were tired but that didn’t prevent me from having an enjoyable day. First we went to the Staten Island Ferry where we rode a ferry past the Statue of Liberty. The ferry was full of people but there were three floors to fit everyone on. It also moved surprisingly fast for such a sizeable boat. The next site on the agenda was to visit Grand Central Station, a rapidly fast train station that carries people from all over the country to and from New York.…

As I woke from my slumber, the warmth escaped my body as I left the bed. I got up to brush my teeth, the cold toothpaste touched my already shivering teeth. I looked in the mirror, my reflection showed the scars I had from all the struggles from my hunting food for my family. I try and help my family by making sure they are safe and that they have all the essentials they need to survive in these harsh conditions. I usually find these “essentials” in the garbage.…

The day I knew that Alexis Smith was going to be one of my favorite people was the same day I saw her rip off her stockings. The sun was hung high on that summer day when I saw Alexis tearing at her stockings. We were both there for a mutual friend’s birthday party and even though the party was outside, most of the partygoers were found indoors trying to fan themselves with whatever they could. I remember that even before Alexis had arrived I had already begun to sweat through my shirt. The grime made me nervous, at that time I was trying to woo a girl I had been obsessing over all summer and body odor was not going to help my chances.…

Bryn, Lauren and I walked through the wooded forest path to get to their house from the middle school for the last time. The shaded path barely shielded us from scorching sun above. We scurried inside to escape the sticky air. As we gathered around the kitchen, Lauren went on and on about this party with a big group, including Madeline and her friends, at the lake. I had tried to be friends with that group long ago; however, I always felt invisible as they and my friends would turn their cold backs on me.…
