Personal Narrative: My Dad

My dad bought it for me when i was only ten. Since then, I’ve worn it three times. For his funeral, my brothers funeral, and my 8th grade graduation. My mom kept it in her room, right next to her jewelry chest. I was only allowed to take it when she said so. Tonight was one of those nights. As I took it out of the box, I looked at the framed picture of my brother and dad. When looked into their faces, my heart began to twist like a wrench on a rusty pipe. Today was the three year anniversary of my brother being shot on Howard Ave. I thought about all the memories we had, and wished they were here to see me go to my first high school dance. I quickly put it on as my mom screamed “come on boy, y’all are gonna be late”. As I ran into the living room, everyone admired how i looked in my slacks, polo shirt, and brand new Timbs. While we were taking pictures, there was a sudden pop outside. The sound of gun shots filled our ears as the room began to silence. As we pulled out of the drive way, everyone waved and told us to “stay safe”. My friends and I sat in the backseat, and listened to the new LL Cool J track my sister had put in the tape player. We were only six blocks from the gym, and suddenly my gold chain began to glow in the bold blue hue of police lights. As we looked out the window a red puddle seemed to spreading towards us. Angela zoomed off and before we knew it we were at the gym. Although we had arrived to the dance, I couldn’t help but think of the blood. It was all too familiar.
