Personal Narrative: My Interest In Reading And Writing

Improved Essays
I never had an interest in reading or writing. I didn’t have an opinion on it. My writing is based off the task given to me. My confidence in reading or writing have never been that great. Before going to school, my parents made sure I knew the alphabet, my numbers up to 20, and loaded me up with vocabulary. They wanted me to succeed in the writing and reading portion because when they tried to help me it was useless. However, I watched a lot of shows and I still do but these shows were really educational like Barney the Dinosaur. And my teachers helped a lot too with my development. Reading, writing, and help from school teachers helped me out in my journey with literacy.

I felt like a two-year old trying to learn how to talk, read and write all over again. I was an outsider to this new culture. However, I needed to learn the language to get ahead. After a few months of moping around I got accepted into City College Academy of the Arts where a teacher got an interest in me. Ms. Shockley was an English teacher who helped me with my pronunciation, punctuation, my writing, reading and

My learning has not stopped and I’m still the bookworm that I was back then. I write horrible essays, but I’m working on it. Reading came easily to me but writing did not. Writing was the most difficult part of the English language. My grammar was so terrible. My punctuation was out of line and my spelling could have made the english department cry. However, I came across this book called Basic English Grammar for Dummies which helped alot. My writing was improving also because I was watching kids’ shows. I watched Arthur, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Martha Speaks, Odd Squad, etc. Martha Speaks helped a lot since it was spelling the words out for

I connect with this quote because I believe it is a very accurate description of myself when I do not write. For me writing gives me the ability to get out of my own head. Writing allows me to put my anxiety on paper. Everything that I can't stop obsessing over leaves my head, enters my fingers, and befriends the paper. When I can not write, in a way it is my own form of insanity.…

Children have been taught how to read for generations, we all have different reading levels based on how much interest we have in reading, and who taught us to read and gave us our passion for it. For me, my love of reading started when I was younger reading with my mother after school, on the weekends and any other free time we had. Every day, when I came home from school I read whether it was by myself or with my mom. She would read with me every day until I finally learned how and could read by myself. Impact On Literacy History

For me I had various positive and negative literacy sponsors. Most impacting in my early childhood, teachers and my parents pushed me year after year to master reading and writing. Some of these literacy sponsors were never wavering in their positivity, and these sponsors were the ones that overcame the negative views I possessed at the time. My original negative outlook on literacy did not come about on accident Early on in my childhood I did not enjoy either reading or writing due my second grade teacher who believed that I was, to put it blatantly, stupid. While in her class, she openly told me that I was not smart enough to be in second grade and it would be a miracle if I got into the third grade.…

This question surprised me because Mrs. Ellis never bothered to ask and assumed I was just a student who misbehaved. Mrs. Perna then asked me if my parents helped me with my homework.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
