On Saturday, September 16, my learning community Common Grounds and I went on a trip to Philly; Once we got there, we visited two different types of churches. After we visited the churches we went to Reading Terminal Market for Lunch. We then talked about our day and what we thought about all the stuff that we learned about that day.
The first church that the we visited was Old Saint Joe’s Catholic Church. When we first go to the church, our tour guide told us about the history of all the buildings that formed the church. Once he was finished we went inside and he told us about the history of how the church was formed and what has happened to it over the years. On this tour, we learned about the history of the church and we got to see the museum. This church was first started in 1794, by former slave Richard Allen. He founded this church because the church that he went to and preached at, St. George Methodist Episcopal church, began to segregate black people from the white. They started to segregate, when more black people started to go to the church, they made them to sit up on the top balcony. After ten years, they had to make their church bigger because of the amount of people that were going to the church. In 1816 the church completely separated from St. Georges and became the American Methodist Episcopal church. Throughout the years, the church helped support the underground railroad financially and hid black Jamaican slaves. In 1863, after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, they helped thousands of ex-slaves migrate to Philadelphia. Being in the church I enjoyed learning about its history, from our tour guide who was excited and lively about the church. The things that I liked most about the church were the stained-glass windows and the museum. The reason is because each of the windows were very beautiful and that they each represent something that is important about the church and their faith. In the museum, we got to see a Muriel of the history of the church and a statue of the head of the founder of the church, that has a unique
