Being a second-year pre-med student is crazy! Especially at how much that has to be accomplished at such a given amount of time, and there are also so many opportunities to take, yet some are looked over due to the overwhelming amount of options being thrown at you. Let me tell you more about myself, I am a 19 year old, African-american, first generation university student, who has had a wide interest in a variety of different things, but if we're speaking career wise, well, it was definitely a journey to get to where I am today. I was always so interested in so many things growing up, like: art, science, law and medicine. In highschool, I said I wanted to be a nurse, then realized that I wanted to be something more. Later on I found out that I was interested in government law, so I applied to become a youth …show more content…
As I progressed throughout highschool and early college, I was told by so many people to hurry up and make a choice, so Pharmacy was what I stuck to, to make it seem like I knew what I wanted to do with my life if anyone were to ever ask me. After a while, I realized that I really needed to know what my true passion was, it was frightening yet amazing seeing people around me decided and happy with their career choice, while I, well couldn't find what I loved. I soon began to actually dig in and research into other things. When I took my first public health class my freshman year of university, I finally found something that captured my interest, Medicine. No, this is not just a phase, I truly find it interesting to the point that I get excited to come back home and learn more about medicine and worldly famines/health disparities. I've never felt this excited for everything else that I've tried throughout my highschool years. I knew medicine has always been there, but I was afraid. Not afraid of the amount of years it would take to complete, but if I was able to complete

During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. I have looked into a multitude of careers that have inspired me at one point in time, but out of all of the fields I have been intrigued by the medical field. I am fascinated in pursuing a career in the medical field because the science of how things work has always been extremely interesting to me. Along with the physiology of life and the human body I am inspired to aid those in need. I have a vehemence for helping women and children and I realized i could combine those two passions with medicine and become an Obstetrician Gynecologist (OB/GYN). Being and OB/GYN would give what is best, health wise, to those who frequently oppressed.…

I went from an exceptional student to one who talks back. Since freshman year Mrs. R had been my favorite teacher, even though I did not have her until I was a junior. She was kind and always there if you needed to take a breather in her class, or simply do whatever you needed to on the computer, if it was your lunch. I've heard students complain about how they did not like her and how annoying she was. However, I couldn't understand why they felt that way about Mrs. R. I never saw her the way they did.…

Growing up I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do as a profession. No inclination of something that amazed me or pushed me toward it. I eventually chose what I thought would be a good stable career simply because it would be a financially good choice but it never seemed like something I could stick with or love. I discounted anything from the medical field because everyone was going there and I didn't want to be a lost number of people rushing to the same career, I wanted to be a little different.…

The first semester of my junior year I was enrolled in a sports medicine class. We began the class with researching specific career paths and majors. The types of jobs available under sports medicine seemed right up my alley. Many of the work hours are spent outside, I would be able to watch sports, be around and help people, learn more about the human body, and how to assist in healing and preventing injuries. After that first day in class I was absolutely sure about what I wanted to do with my life.…

My first clinical was at Gateway’s Ortho Medical Unit, which handles both bone issues and medical issues such as infection. The unit was almost empty, which meant I only viewed three patients. My nurse only took vitals for two patients because they were sleeping, which left it up to the third patient to bring excitement to my clinical, which they did. This patient was suffering from pain accompanied with dementia.…

For my first week at clinical I would say it went pretty well. The first day I had one patient a 77 year old female who was admitted for bilateral edema and a CHF exacerbation. The first thing that comes to my mind about this clinical experience was that it flew by. Some of my days at SCCF seem to inch by at a snail’s pace, while some like today go by before you can even blink. I appreciated the days that go by fast. It really helped that most of the day, I felt like I had something to do. One funny thing that occurred that was crazy hilarious was I actually met someone who matched the saying “chatty Cathy”; I don’t mean it as an insult, she just had a lot to say.…

It is said that you find your way while you are in college, but I actually lost mine, and it was the best thing to ever happen to me. When I was four years old, I decided that I wanted to be a doctor and everything I did from that day forward was geared towards enhancing myself to be the best physician I could be. After my first year of my undergraduate degree at Michigan State University however, I was terrified to find that science and medicine did not hold the same draw for me as it always had. I found myself with the same passion for changing people’s lives, minus the desire for treating illnesses and researching medical conditions.…

Medicine fascinated me even when I was a child. I remember being about eight years old when my pediatrician asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I view medicine as discovery, the chance to learn the science surrounding the human body and develop the skills that will allow me to heal others. As I entered college, I pursued experiences that exposed me to the world of medicine, becoming more involved within my community and university.…

As an international student, I had spent all four years of high school trying to understand what was going on around me and striving to survive the new environment, culture, and language.
