Personal Narrative: One To Break Lab Safety Rules

Decent Essays
I’ve always been one to break lab safety rules, but you might consider standing on your tiptoes in crocs while feeding invertebrates appropriate behavior for a ten year old. But that’s how I spent my school breaks, in my dad’s lab, doing a bit of scientific exploration of my own as he worked. Dad and I always arrived at promptly 8 o’clock every morning, somewhat asleep from the cold created by the marine layer. When we entered my dad’s office, I took full advantage of the rolling chairs, spinning around as Dad checked his email. As he went off to work, I went off to play, reading first my books from home, then delving into the boxes of insects and other small animals in the adjacent storage lab as a Dr. Demento CD played on the lab boombox.

I woke with a start at the obnoxious noise coming from my alarm. It was 9:00 a.m. on a Thursday, in the middle of the summer. Today, I was going to my favorite place in the world: the Tulsa State Fair. I dragged myself down the creaking stairs and into the family room, where I turned on the television. I then ate a bowl of cocoa puffs and went back upstairs to prepare myself for the day.…

The hazy feeling of staying awake for an entire day settled in my body. As the early flickers of sunlight shone through the grand windows of the studio, I was able to look down at my work and appreciate the beauty of it. Perhaps it was the several shots of espresso, or the feeling of adrenaline but I was able to complete my first Architectural project. Just like most of my summer, I spent hours using my lead holder to perfect each line in my plans and sections and I sharpening my pencil much too often to make sure that each line was crisp and that my line weight was exceptional.…
