Personal Narrative: Track Is Life

“Dance is life”. “Ball is life”. “Track is life”. Many young people say these phrases because everyone else does. In Instagram and Twitter bios, this is all you see from teenagers. I however, have never been one to follow the crowd. I've never felt like I needed to boast my love for dance on social media. It speaks in my performances, my ability to create choreography, my readiness in every rehearsal, and most importantly my confidence.

In the third grade, I received a scholarship to dance ballet until I was 18 and enjoyed every minute of it! I was taken out of the program a year later expecting to move to California, but never did. Although years passed before I had the opportunity to dance again, my high school experiences are what made me want to become a member of the UNLV family!

I became infatuated with ballet, jazz, contemporary, and modern dance. We did two shows that year, and I was one of the lead dancers in both, which always had me on the verge of tears in happiness. The order of progression is usually dance 1, dance 2, dance 3, then the school’s team Dance Fusion. I started in Dance 1 with every other freshman, but by my sophomore year, me and a few others from previous years class had advanced to Dance 3. I knew I was unique when a select few, including myself, were invited to attend Dance Day at none other than UNLV. It was one of my most exciting moments to date. I was assigned to hip hop and contemporary classes. There, I learned a great deal and had the utmost fun! I thoroughly enjoyed the dances the instructors taught, and the dance show UNLV gave us all at the end. All the creations from the students were impeccable!
