Stefani Stefani is my new Llama. He is a rescue animal who came from Michigan. His mom’s name is Gwen so when he was born they named him Stefani. I first met him when we were at a fiber festival in Franklin Indiana. I volunteered to help teach people about Llamas and Alpacas and spent about 6 hours “playing” with Stefani and had to have him! The process to adopt him was took about a 2 months from the day we met him to the day he arrived at the farm that we are boarding at. I learned a lot about the requirements and the expectations of owning livestock.
The adoption application was 2 pages long and very detailed. We needed to have enough grazing land for him and to provide basic shelter. A Llama needs ½ acre to graze and you can have up to 4 Llamas per acre. If you don’t own your own property you can choose to board your animal at another llama farm. If you board like we are then you have to work out a contract with the boarding farm and submit it along with your application. We had to find a Vet and list all of the possible reasons that we were wanting to adopt. I show Llamas in 4h, attend multiple community service events and even walk in parades so we listed all of those as reasons on why we wanted to adopt an animal.

I work him every day for a short amount of time to get him ready for his first show in 3 weeks. We do walking over bridges, jumps, step overs, weaving, change of pace, stepping in pools and walking through hula hoops. After the basics are mastered we move onto feet in tires, backing through hula hoops, and showmanship. We also work on handling activities like lifting feet and touching ears, or showing teeth so that we can take him to public relations events like parades. It is very important to make sure that a Llama can be taken to an event with small kids and know that the kids will be safe around such big

The llama belongs to an interesting genus of mammals and is valued both as a pack animal and for its fleece, according to Llama—Britannica Online Encyclopedia. As a South American member of the camel family, the llama was probably bred from guanacos in the early times of the Inca Indians to be domestic pack animals. It is classified as a lamoid, making it closely related to the alpaca and the vincuna, as well as the aforementioned guanaco. Llamas will eat a wide variety of vegetation, have a high thirst tolerance, possess plenty of endurance, and are gentle, gregarious animals. These traits make them excellent choices for their primary occupation as pack animals.…
