When a parent sends their child to school, they trust in the district to insure their safety. Wouldn’t it be a relief to know that the school your child attends every day was ready for whatever came their way? According to New York Times writer Kim Severson, The number of schools who allow their teachers to carry guns as a use of protection is at a continuous rise, and almost impossible to figure out the exact number. The use of guns in schools is a subject with a large amount of controversy. How better to protect ourselves against such a threatening matter, than to be ready to fight back with the same power?
Everyones first instinct is to ban the guns from entering school campus. But the people …show more content…
Teresa Thomas said one of the many perks of allowing teachers with a license to carry a concealed handgun is that it is the least expensive option for a district to choose. Hiring security guards for even just the high school and middle school is millions of dollars per year. Just because guns are permitted on school campus does not make it mandatory for the district, it just gives them an option to take proper precautions on protecting the district if necessary (Wogan). It gives the option of a self defence method, so the districts have the choice to fight back. The idea of allowing teachers with a concealed carry license to carry a gun on campus is to keep the guns away from the killer and supply them for the protector (Severson). Although guns can 't really be taken from the bad guys, teachers having access to fight back with firearms as well leads the criminals farther away from the schools, because they think their threat could be matched by a teacher or administrator carrying just as much firepower as they are. Studies show that not only will arming our teachers give faculty, staff, students, and parents a better piece of mind, properly training our teachers will lead to less heinous acts taking place (Siebold). Most who are against the idea, feel that guns will just promote more violence. Recent studies show …show more content…
Guns should not just be handed out throughout the school districts, but they shouldn 't be crossed out completely either. Only staff who have undergone extensive training, and security guards should be able to carry guns. “Young says that if teachers are properly trained, school principals and teachers should be allowed to carry loaded firearms on their campuses. He say sit will make schools safer in an emergency” (Phillips). Having a concealed weapon on a school campus comes with tremendous responsibility, and very extensive physical and mental training. Guns should not just be thrown at teachers with no knowledge of how to use them, or just how destructive a gun can be. Teachers and administrators of a district should have to go through the required number of hours for proper training, and be able to pass a mental examination. These tests will insure their capability of having such a responsibility on their shoulders. This wont be for all teachers and administrators, but the ones who can handle it could save the lives of their peers and students. Although Allowing concealed weapons is not the only option, is is the most efficient in price. Very few districts have the money to hire security guards for each school, so giving teachers nearly 60 hours of training and their own guns seems like a good way to protect the nation 's public schools from the ongoing
