Yet, these statistics do not encapsulate all of The Rose’s mystique, intrigue, and troubled history, nor do they demonstrate the way in which it complicates the canonical survey of art and design that we began the course with/the Western canon of art or how it complements the other modules in this course as they currently exist. I specifically wanted to work with postwar American art of the 1950s because this period allowed for the most…
The 1960s was an unforgettable decade jam-packed with innovation of all kinds, you dig? The sixties ushered with exquisite fashion and brand new trends that utterly presented the peculiar characteristics of 1960s society and culture. Additionally, the art of sports was growing in popularity across the board, and history was made with mind-blowing sports events and prominent players that many still cherish to this day. Moreover, the death of John F. Kennedy and the fight for civil rights made the 1960s a bitter, remarkable time. The renowned Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought persistently and altered the prejudiced views of society on minorities.…
The 1960s was a time period that brought a lot of political activity and social stirrup. President Lyndon Johnson went into office after Kennedy’s assassination and the United States was being reshaped into a great society with reform programs that targeted poverty and brought relief to families in urban communities. In foreign affairs, the president invested the countries’ resources and troops towards the stabilization of non-communist efforts in Asia. However, our efforts to aid Southern Vietnamese friends spiraled into a decade-long beef. Back at home, Americans were starting to feel the grip of the War and many began to oppose the combat overseas.…
Today, television is an incredibly large part of basic American culture, with many people’s lives revolving completely around the little screens, or sometimes large, that dominate nearly every single living room in the modern family’s home. But, in the late 1940s, when TV was first introduced, this wasn’t the case. Television has always been on a rollercoaster between fads, and new technologies introduced throughout the decades. But one of the overall most influential decades for the television and the evolution of the entertainment aired for the people through it.…
In your own words please describe the growing division between teenagers and older generations in the 1950s. What was it about rock 'n' roll that made it an incubator for alienation and rebelliousness? Before the WWII, teenagers were different in that they had limited freedom, scarce resources for making any purchases that were solely for their wants, not necessarily for their or the family’s needs, and the span of time that comprised a “carefree youth” that we now take for granted did not exist for majority of the young people before the advent of the Baby Boomer generation. After WWII, the economy in the U.S. was booming and parents, mindful of the hardships they experienced in their youth, could indulge their children with material things such as allowances that they could spend at their discretion.…
The society that was the 1940s and 1950s in the United States was an entirely different world than modern day. From the way children were raised to politics and the state of the economy, the differences became more apparent as I interviewed two of my grandparents. The insights I gained from my knowledgeable grandparents allowed me to view the society we are currently living in with a much different, refined point of view. Biographies Beginning with my grandfather, Peter Muehr, my mom’s father, I was eager to absorb his viewpoint of the culture in which he was raised.…
Spirit of the times Since the beginning of the time and the lost generation, the world has been entertained by instrumental sounds. This is a way to show happiness and to take stress away. In the 1920s, the African American community had a major development in jazz music. It was major progress.…
For those who did not live through the experience of the Sixties, it is often difficult to comprehend this tumultuous period. Even those who lived through the era and have studied the Sixties have wrestled with its deeper meaning. While the Sixties’ ultimate “meaning” remains elusive, there can be no doubt that the period’s transformative effect upon Canadians – culturally, politically, and economically was immense. From arts and architecture to politics and protest, the decade has attained near-mythical status, leaving an undeniable influence on virtually every aspect of Canadian life. The images, sounds, and tastes of the decade remain an indelible part of our own twenty-first-century experience, a large part of our collective DNA, and…
Woodstock The 1960’s marked a huge turning point in American history. Music continued to become more and more influential in everyday life. By the mid 1960’s, young Americans began to feel progressively more frustrated by the society they were being brought up in. The youth had to witness women be suppressed and discredited strictly based on gender.…
Emma Philbin Paper #1: Appropriation 2-7-16 Rock History In the 1940s and the 1950s, the music of African American people was the supporting block for the rise of Rock and Roll music. During this time period, racial integration began happening as African Americans began moving from the South to the Northen cities, and within this we began to see cultural integration. However society still greatly held African Americans and whites segregated; and as a result music was greatly segregated as well. It was deemed by society that African American artists had a specific sound to their music and had a genre of their own.…
“The 1960s were about releasing ourselves from conventional society and freeing Ourselves” said Yoko Ono, peace activist. People in the 60s felt they could express themselves and be the person they want to be. From this the 60s created a subculture called hippies. Hippies believed in freedom, peace, love, and people’s rights. Commonly, that is what people associate with this decade, but there’s much more to it than that.…
Hayley Wilgers History of Rock and Roll March 25, 20 Pop Rock, well known in early days as well as today, precisely means popular. Many believe the term “Pop Rock” to be more of a commercial term, and would describe it as a lighter version of “Rock” in itself. After the British Invasion, people started to use it to oppose the original “Rock” term. It is an upbeat type of music and is very well known by fans of Elvis, The Bee Gees, and The Police. Rock and Roll was one major music category, and people loved it.…
Cultural appropriation is when elements of one cultural group are adopted by a different group. While there are various types of appropriation such as fashion, art and music, this essay will focus on fashion appropriation of Indigenous Americans (also known as Native Americans). Fashion appropriation of Indigenous Americans refers to the adoption of cultural elements such as war bonnets, totem poles and tribal markings, used on clothing, hair or decoration. Fashion appropriation of the Indigenous is not foreign (Lynskey, 2014), established companies such as Urban Outfitters and Paul Frank Industries had been accused for appropriation (Hoskins, 2013). Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
