Possibility Of Uncivility In Higher Education

I have been impressed with the readings for this class. When it comes to incivility, it is interesting to see that even though it has been published in a book and articles have been written, there are still those who do not understand the magnitude of this issue in higher education or in the general public. I agree with Twale and DeLuca, when they state that incivility has behaviors that are indicative of bullying (Twale & DeLuca, 2008). When co-workers show intolerance or disrespect toward others, this really has a negative effect on an organization, a school, or a group. This is difficult to address when the incivility starts at the top of an organization and it breeds throughout the environment and it runs rampant. In corporate America, …show more content…
When humans are brought closer to one another you should expect aggression to occur (Twale & DeLuca, 2008). I don’t totally agree with this statement. Just because there is an increase in population, does not give people an excuse to have bad behavior and to be uncivil toward each other. With increase in population, we should have more tolerance of others and their differences.
I also enjoyed reading about social learning theory. I believe higher education would benefit so much if we ensured that everyone understood aggression and how people are socialized. Since this is a white male dominated world, I believe all other individuals learn how to function in society, however when some white males have to work for other ethnic groups or women, sometimes they will act uncivil toward

I have seen people be disrespectful toward each other, but I have not personally witness anyone being uncivil towards someone. If I would see this, I would address it. I have had someone try to get loud with me, and I addressed it immediately, and will not have an issue with that person again.
In Organization and Administration in Higher Education, it was good to gain a better understanding of how higher education works and functions. The one thing that I was able to do in the class that was different from some of my classmates is by me being an administrator, I actually get to sit at the table where most of the discussions in the book took place.
I have always had an appreciation of faculty, but I have an even more appreciation of them now. I see that at some places there are big gulfs between faculty and administration, but when you put this book and incivility I understand why faculty does not trust administration. The one thing that I think the administration has to do a better job is understanding that faculty do want to work with administers, but administrators need to understand that faculty don’t want to be talked to as if they are not smart enough to understand when they are not being told everything

One problem I learned from class, is that women are currently still face many issues that were once thought of as being resolved. Issues such as wage discrimination, job discrimination, sexualization, and violence are only a few of the many issues we are challenged with. Not only do women still deal with these issues but we also endure sexism on a day to day biases. These issues never came to my attention in my everyday life. However, through taking this class it made me socially aware of the issues that I was facing but was not conscious of.…

The course readings helped me to grow and develop as a writer. I found the readings to be a valuable addition to the course material. I certainly appreciated all of the readings, but the one that provided me the most value was Sylvia Morales' "How to Read an Academic Article. " I found so much of this reading to be extreme key useful. For example, I never gave much thought to the various components of an academic article such as the title, abstract, introduction, literature review/background, methods, results, and conclusion/discussion.…

The author of this book is Carter G. Woodson. The book is entitled, The Mis-Education of The Negro. The main issue in this book is basically stating that the African Americans have been miseducated Woodson intended to make a valid address on “educated negroes” and who are they being taught by. If blacks are being taught by people outside of the race, then we must question the “educated negro”. Woodson is explaining to us why the Black community is so divided now..…

Influencing Style Assessment Self-knowledge is fundamental because it teaches how to manage our attitudes in leadership, entrepreneurship and even team membership. In the article “What’s Your Influencing Style” by Chris Musselwhite and Tammie Plouffe, we learned why was of great importance for us to know what is our predominant style of influence or which one we feel more comfortable with. Our influencing style helps us in determining how we exert our power and influence on others and also aids in understanding the other influencing styles (5). Each of the styles of influence presents its own drawbacks but all are beneficial depending on the circumstance. I believe, it is normal for us to act using two styles, one predominant and one supporting…

One of the major problems that our socioeconomic system produces is conformity. The production of such a characteristic in students lead to several class issues as they grow older. Anyon supports the notion of produced conformity in schooling through her study of students that belong to a certain socioeconomic status. Students belonging to working class schools were taught to memorize formulas, follow procedures, take orders, and receive knowledge. Evident through the particular pedagogy in the math class, children were told the definition of terms in two digit division, how to solve such a problem using a fixed protocol, and to memorize the information through rote practice (167).…

I believe that a teacher needs to have respect for his/her students in order to earn respect back from them. Growing up, we are all told the same thing, we have to respect our teachers. Even if you do not like them they are the adult and youth are obligated to respect someone that is older, and has power. This entry level respect only goes so far. If students only have respect for a title, then the teacher has not created a successful learning environment.…

Psychology is something that has always been interesting to me. While taking this class I learned thing about myself that I never knew and what they meant. The timelines that we did really helped me reflect on myself and where my goals in life were and where I was going in life. This has helped me to look at things a little bit deeper as I am now expecting my first child and what I may see in her as she grows. The theories that I was able to learn about in chapters 5 and 6 have helped me to know things that are good and bad to use in the classroom and with the students.…

This class was nothing like I’ve ever been apart of. The dynamics of the class, how it was structured, and the requirements, were all so foreign to me that it really allowed me to grow as a student, and a business major. I learned a lot about not only myself, but also how I react in certain situations. I also learned about my peers in a way I would otherwise not have. Beginning with the class dynamics, I learned how different personalities are.…

It has been an interesting class; fill with current topics that I believe are important to talk about. Honestly at the beginning of the class I did not think that this was going to be interactive at all. My first thought was that this was just going to only lecture, as many of my other classes. Professor Morgan, you really bring that energy required to talk about such delicate topics; an openness that actually pushes us to participate with our own opinions and personal points of view. I have to admit that this is not the first class I have had that talks about gender, race, ethnicity, and religion.…
