When humans are brought closer to one another you should expect aggression to occur (Twale & DeLuca, 2008). I don’t totally agree with this statement. Just because there is an increase in population, does not give people an excuse to have bad behavior and to be uncivil toward each other. With increase in population, we should have more tolerance of others and their differences.
I also enjoyed reading about social learning theory. I believe higher education would benefit so much if we ensured that everyone understood aggression and how people are socialized. I have seen people be disrespectful toward each other, but I have not personally witness anyone being uncivil towards someone. If I would see this, I would address it. I have had someone try to get loud with me, and I addressed it immediately, and will not have an issue with that person again.
In Organization and Administration in Higher Education, it was good to gain a better understanding of how higher education works and functions. The one thing that I was able to do in the class that was different from some of my classmates is by me being an administrator, I actually get to sit at the table where most of the discussions in the book took place.
I have always had an appreciation of faculty, but I have an even more appreciation of them now. I see that at some places there are big gulfs between faculty and administration, but when you put this book and incivility I understand why faculty does not trust administration. The one thing that I think the administration has to do a better job is understanding that faculty do want to work with administers, but administrators need to understand that faculty don’t want to be talked to as if they are not smart enough to understand when they are not being told everything
