I completed my site observation on Monday the 19th of October it was a sunny brisk cool day with temperatures hovering in the mid 60’s. The daycare/preschool is on a busy section of route 4 outside East Waterboro. The center is opened from 7 am to 6 pm daily, they cater to a variety of children, before- and after-school program, preschool classes Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 8:30-11:30; and full/ part time daycare children that include ages 18 months to 6 years old. The facility handles approximately forty children, on Monday while I was observing there were three children in the toddler class and seven attending the preschool class at 11:30 one child left and the remainder of the day the class was integrated. The toddler/infant section is located within the main house up two flights of stairs consisting of two steps a landing and four additional stairs with banisters and walls installed for safety. In this section there is a kitchen (stove, sink and refrigerator) one small room for toddlers to play in a large spacious bathroom and down the hall another bathroom that is presently being renovated and two more rooms at the end with cribs and play area for infants. Off of the mud room is a larger room with multiple sections for preschool and toddler age children. There is an area for circle time, trucks and blocks, a table for arts and crafts and lunch, an age appropriate exercise gym is central located for all children to use. Continuing around the room there are books, a computer desk, doll house, and a grocery play area. All supplies are in bins easily accessible to all the children. Also in this section is a large bathroom, and a kitchen that is not used as a kitchen but as a work area for the …show more content…
I did not feel the children were in extreme danger but a little more caution could have been incorporated into the day’s activities. When I arrived the door was opened and I just walked in no one questioned me. During the day children were not accounted for no head counts were performed several times throughout the day it was asked where is this child staff was not always aware of who was where. When we broke into groups for snack kids went where ever they wanted so staff was unable to keep an accurate account of where someone was. Even though there is a door system it is locked by turning a normal door lock I witnessed the children unlocking the door prior to any other staff member. Children were asked to keep their hands off each other but one child who presently is having behavioral issues hit two children that were left with him unattended and no one could figure out what happened and why these children were crying. While outside on the playground none of the children had helmets on and kids were falling off their bikes playing and not hurting themselves but the potential was there and no one suggested a different game. On this day they did not install the fence so the teachers positioned themselves so the children would not head out toward the street. Of course the children tested the boundaries. When the children were informed it was lunch time they just all took off running some were inside some
