Compared to the “free love” nowadays, people of the mid-century are more concerned about matching on social class. If you couldn’t support your life, couldn’t own a place to live, couldn't keep life security at a certain level, then “love” is meaningless.

In the novel, Mr. Collins and Mr. Darcy are two symbols for both lower & upper class shows how class builds the character of people. Collins born in mid (lower) class and get help from an upper-class person (Lady Catherine), causing him gets into a new circle, getting a better life than before, shaped him to a sycophant who just knows how to fawn on someone. He kept mentioning about Lady Catherine, eulogized how good she is, wants to let everyone knows about his gratitude towards her so he can keep this life forever. On another hand, Darcy was born in a rich family, taught that he’s nobler than the average person, and before the proposal to Elizabeth he always acts pride and tries to disdain others and thought it’s the fact that how the thing works. The action of two characters reflect their education level, what kind of family they are born in, and all the prerequisite they got are contingent on class. Because they were born at a different class level so they’ll have different life experience, different people they met different, “rules”been taught finally made them turn into different types of person.
Class in Pride and Prejudice is giving a different starting point for people it decides how much “power” you could own, how much chance you can make. If you were born in a lower class, you have limited choices and if you’re in an upper class your life will be diversified and you will live much happier in comparison to lower-class.
