In the essay “What’s Happened to Disney Films?” author John Evans states the concerns of parents with regards to Disney motion pictures and how they are not as child-friendly as they were in the 1960’s compared to the 1990’s. Evans focus on the issues brought about in these films ranging from the use of profanities to violence, which should not be in Disney films. I understand the logic behind the authors position, he believes that the content of Disney films has taken a turn for the worse. Firstly, the author states that Disney has become a conglomerate having many subsidiaries and that it has had troubling effects on what Disney considers child-friendly.…
Nowadays the world progresses faster than ever. The nation has been swept by rapid developments in technology and inspiring social movements. Directors and artists notice these changes, and as a result, film adapts. The release date of a film can speak volumes about a film. It is a marker of all the elements available at a specific time to form the formal and social qualities of a film.…
The majority of large animation producers of the time were drafted in to produce informational films for a number of different aspects of the war effort. Animation was now being sought after as a form of motivating and explaining in an engaging manner due to its relatively simplistic nature of the time (Solomon, 1994). It seemed that animation had begun to move away from the notion that it could only be used as a form of entertainment. It was now being utilized for its ability to convey information. Delgaudio (1997) claims that animations were effectively filling this role because they are watched more attentively than live action film or lectures.…

Over the past century, the rate of modernization has exponentially increased. From technological innovation to cultural shifts, the collective human experience has rapidly transformed. As a medium of expression, cinema has responded effectively to these changes by documenting the impacts of the evolving modern world. Film scholar Miriam Hansen’s modernity theory is manifested in creative innovations that visually showcase new technologies and respond to societal attitudes of the times. While Ozu’s That Night’s Wife and Capra’s Why We Fight incorporate the “effects of modernity” by utilizing industrial innovations in electrical lighting and film, Capra’s…
Constance Untalan Melissa Lopez First Year Composition March 11, 2015 Comparison Activity Lesson 5 For many years I’ve been in search of one of the most amazing films ever made, it’s called “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Remembering just how wonderful this movie was, I want to have one for my own collection.…
The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” Meets “The Lion King” Two Stories of Revenge To take a classic Shakespearian tragedy and turn it into a children's film seems almost beyond comprehension, however I intend to show how just that was accomplished with “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” by William Shakespeare and “The Lion King” a movie produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. These media, classic play and animated children's film, are not as far separated as many may think. Each starts with a story they wish to tell. Each needs to make that story interesting to their targeted audience and each strives to make the point of their story comprehensible enough that their audience…
Critical Assessment of a Work by Gary D. Rhodes Gary D. Rhodes of Queen’s University Belfast challenges many current conceptions about Hollywood in his work “ ‘Movie’: How a Single Word Shaped Hollywood Cinema.” Specifically, Rhodes argues that the audience has power over the corporation in this industry. He explains how the word “movie” is a major representation if this idea. Rhodes presents this argument because he has seen how common it has become to accuse corporate Hollywood of finessing it’s viewers. However, Rhodes pushes the idea that the audience is responsible for the way that Hollywood cinema works today.…
One of the more interesting films of this time period was, Ivan the Terrible, directed by Sergei Eisenstein. The film was actually commissioned by the Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, who admired and idolized Ivan. This two-part historical epic, however, went against Party lines when it portrayed Ivan in a negative light. This resulted in the banning of the film on the order of Stalin which terminated the proposition of a third-part to the series. Oddly enough the first Part of the series, Ivan the Terrible, Part I, won the approval of Joseph Stalin as well as a Stalin Price for portraying the ruler as a national Hero.…
Comically Crude The line drawn between comedy and vulgar references have become blurred in today's society. A comedian may make a joke which offends a great body of people all for the purpose of making a few laugh. Famous comedians make a living off of exploiting both groups, and individual peoples, with derogatory comments in order to make large masses of money. In the past, comedians would cross social lines and force society forward using both obscene language and seemingly deranged or lewd topics.…
Throughout the United States’ participation in World War II, the American film industry was called upon by the federal government to produce film after film to inform the public of the events overseas and to emotionally influence the American people in order to keep them invested in the war efforts. From films of live combat during the Battle of the Midway, to cartoons promoting the donation of resources like rubber for military purposes, to dramas of romance between a soldier and his lover back home, the everlasting presence of the war found itself featured in nearly every film of the early 1940s. Thomas Doherty’s Projections of War seeks to thoroughly record that history of the role of the United States Film Industry in World War II, and…
It doesn’t give you what to desire — it tells you what to desire” (Slavoj Zizek). How is the cinema the ultimate pervert art? Cinema is shared. Cinema is not “owned” by a person alone, but enjoyed by everyone. Everyone has been introduced to a form of cinema, even though they may not have seen it in that manner.…
