The development and psychological growth of children are highly dependent on the parenting skills executed by the child’s parents or caregiver. The parenting styles play a prominent role in development and have tremendously changed throughout the years. In each generation, the parenting styles vary due to increased research, technology updates, and different policies resulting in positive or negative outcomes. For this assignment, I interviewed my grandma who has witnessed the different ways of parenting and the different tactic parents use in two different generations.

This caused parents to be doubtful on whether they were parenting correctly or not. There are various parenting styles, but my grandma believes providing children with lots of comfort and having routines that works best for them results in good parenting. Based on Baumrind’s parenting style model, this type of parenting is called authoritative parenting. Authoritative parenting is providing lots of warmth and responsiveness to children and also having reasonable control. As a parent, she used the few parenting books available at libraries and advice from relatives to gain knowledge on how to be a good parent. Although, she received plenty of controversial advice, she knew each child is unique and not every piece of advice given to her worked perfectly. An example would be how she got one child to go bed at night versus how she got another child to go to bed. Many parents say giving warm baths before sleeping is the best method to a good night sleep, however for one child it did not work at all. She altered the bed time routine that was best suitable for that child, in order for the child to get a good sleep. By altering the child’s bed time routine depicts how a parent responses to satisfy their children’s needs. As a result, with many contradicting advices, the best way to parent correctly is using the authoritative parenting style to satisfy the child’s need and knowing what works best for them.
