After, then other biochemical tests were performed that were specific to the gram- negative bacteria to start the identification process of the unknown. The results of the gram negative tests lead to the identification of the bacteria Alcaligenes faecalis. The gram stain procedure was the first test performed by isolating a colony from the pure culture streak plate. The gram stain was followed orderly right from the referenced laboratory manual. The test resulted to be Gram- Negative bacteria from the compound microscope which were pink and rod shaped that can be seen with the 100x objective lens with the oil immersion.…
36. What are the complications associated with untreated anal fissures? Like other sore conditions, acute anal fissure may cause complications when left untreated. Some may argue that living with an uncured condition is less excruciating than subjecting one’s self to treatment. Nevertheless, the risks of leaving the injury untreated is not worth it.…
Management of Central Lines Sarah Dunbar, Lourie Grijalva, Brittany Matthews, Megen Price, & Lauren Sapp Introduction According to the Joint Commission (2012, p. v), Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) are the most frequent cause of healthcare-associated bloodstream infections, and about 3 million are placed in the United States annually. A central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is an infection in the blood that develops as a result of introducing bacteria into these central lines. “In the United States, from 250,000 to 500,000 CLABSIs are estimated to occur every year, which result in a rate from 10% to 30% of mortality” (Perin, Erdmann, Higashi, & Sasso, 2016). Currently, one third of all hospital acquired…
They needed close ventillatory and cardiovascular monitoring and support. Medical complications as chest infections, ischemic heart attacks and uncontrolled diabetes were recorded. Seven wound infections were encountered that were successfully treated in six cases by sensitive antibiotics after obtaining culture and sensitivity and repeated daily dressings while in one patient in group A, there was deep infection extending to the mesh, this patient was subjected to mesh removal to control the infection. Seroma affected 22 patients but was easily managed by repeated evacuation using a large wide pored syringe under wide-spectrum antibiotic cover. Four patients in PP group and one in composite group developed grade II abdominal compartmental syndrome; all patients were treated conservatively with appropriate fluid therapy under ICU guidance.…
Case Report: This is a 56-year-old white female with a history of cirrhosis secondary to alcoholism and NASH, history of portal hypertension and ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy, who was brought to the ED by her mother and daughter due to concerns about confusion. The patient is confused and unable to answer questions; therefore this information has been obtained by family members. According to the family members, the patient has been confused for 2-3 days and has had a few episodes of emesis for the last few days and was drinking an excess amount of lactulose for the last 3 days due to constipation; however, she did have a loose bowel movement yesterday. The patient has been complaining of diffuse body pain including her abdomen, but she…
A1/A1a. Problem/ Explain The identifying problem is Decreasing Central Line Bloodstream Infections in the Acute Care Setting by the Use of Multimodal Disinfectant Protocols. Collaboration was initiated with the assistance of the Hospital Chairperson of the Practice Council to initiate change in practice. Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLASBI) can result in financial burden and/or morbidity in the acute care setting.…
Pre- clinical HPI: History of Present Illness (include all signs and symptoms reported by the parent/child found in the admitting note history and physical). 13 year male who developed abdominal pain on Thursday morning 7/15/16 after eating breakfast. The pain worsened throughout the day and then he began vomiting that evening. He was unable to keep down food and only had a couple of sips of liquid on Friday afternoon. Mom called his PCP who prescribed Zofran which help with his nausea but the pain intensified.…

The decision of conventional incision and open drainage by the surgeons was made in view of the large extension of the abscess. In some cases closure by primary suturing may be done under antibiotic cover.[3] She had preterm premature rupture of membranes probably due to some ascending infection that was not detected on cervical swab due to antibiotic use. Fortunately her abdominal wound healed well and she had no spread of sepsis as special care was taken to isolate her abscess site during the caesarean section. A midline vertical incision for caesarean section that was taken avoided the inevitable lateral extension into the infected left lower abdominal tissue planes.…
The organism that is commonly referred to as “Strep” is Streptococcus pyogenes. S. pyogenes is a facultative anaerobe: an aerobe that does not require oxygen for its metabolism and is capable of growth in the absence of it (Cowan & Talaro, 2009, p. 185). S. pyogenes is a prokaryote because it is an organism that has no nuclear membrane, no organelles in the cytoplasm except ribosomes, and has its genetic material in the form of single continuous strands forming coils or loops (“Classification,” n.d.). S. pyogenes is a gram-positive bacteria cocci in chains and it causes many diseases in humans, making it parasitic (“Classification,” n.d.). For optimal growth for this organism is 37°C, can be incubated between 1-2 days, and have a pH of 7.4 to 7.6.…
1.1. Background information Postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs) are a major source of morbidity and mortality in the surgical patient. It is the 3rd commonly reported nosocomial infection accounting for 10 to 40% of all nosocomial infections[1, 2]. In 2010, an estimated 16 million operative procedures were performed in acute care hospitals in the United States.…
There may be abdominal pain... in the epigastric area or in the upper right quadrant and is described as dull, aching, and causing sensation of fullness” (Grossman & Porth, 2014, p. 1228). Later signs and symptoms of liver cirrhosis are “portal hypertension and liver cell failure… thrombocytopenia… gynecomastia and a feminizing pattern of pubic hair distribution in men because of testicular atrophy, spider angiomas, palmar erythema, and encephalopathy with asterixis and neurologic signs” (Grossman & Porth, 2014, p.1228). Some other manifestations of liver cirrhosis are purpura, edema, hemorrhoids, and periumbilical caput…
Getting an infection from improper care during or after insertion of a central line is the last thing you want to have while in the hospital. An infection that can happen is a bloodstream infection, in which bacteria enters though the site of insertion or one of the hubs on the catheter and ends up in your bloodstream. This paper will discuss Kaiser Permanente’s policy on central venous catheter, also known as a central line, care and dressing change, and whether it follows the current evidence-based practice on preventing bloodstream infection in patients who have them inserted. Therefore, I will explain about what a central line is, why evidence-based practice is important in the clinical setting, what Kaiser Permanente’s policy about…
The introduction discussed the worldwide problem of surgical site infections (SSI) within acute care settings in European and American patients. The health care acquired infections (HAI) of interest focused on SSIs. Although all patients within the acute care settings were susceptible to HAI, the greatest risk was found with patients requiring intensive care stays. As a result of HAIs, patients had extended hospital stays and significantly added health care cost.…
Along with the different functions that follow while food is being digested into the body. Among the many things that the digestive system has to offer it also has it’s not so good perks like symptoms & disorders. I have chosen to research about how an infected appendix can affect anybody without a single warning. I will also discuss how it affected a very well-known solo artist and his ordeal behind his Appendicitis.…
